First part - Emotions and feelings
The host started asking on how the participants are adapting on the Covid-19 and what are their emotions right now.
Giovanni, beekeeper: The work didn't change at all, except for some papers to go out and work. I can go everywhere for the bees. I'm somehow relaxed for this situation, people around him stopped being so frenetic and so I'm less nervous.
Luca, social worker: I started with anxiety the lockdown and then he adapted well. I think that this come from having less responsibility (no taxes to pay, no work to be done!). Right now my work should be renting an ancient house for tourists, but since there are no tourists, I'm trying to understand what to do in the next months.
Matteo, environmental consultant: I'm completely without work right now, because smartworking doesn't work well for public administrations and I'm quite worried about the time of re-opening. I'm spending time at home watching films and talking with friends, but also studying.
Then the host asked if the participants "feel" climate change in their life and their work.
Giovanni, beekeeper: bees are strong bioindicators, so this year, in February, with more than 18 celsius degrees, they were ready to go out and then March was cold and they were disturbed.Beekeepers are at the forefront of the fight for climate. So Climate Change make me decide what to do every year for the bees.
Luca, social worker: I'm not feeling Climate Change, but learned a lot being in contact with migrants. While the public think that most of them are economical migrants, I met much more people flying away from water stress and agricultural stress in their countries.
Matteo: I'm consulting the Ministry for using less pesticides in the maintenance of roads, railways. I observe that there are many more invasive plants, coming from warmer climates.
Second Part - Perception of others
The host asked each participants to take the role of someone else in the call, and try to figure out what could happen to him and its work in the next years.
Giovanni choose Luca and its work as touristic host in these days. He will definitely try to attract italian tourists that are more sensitive to sustainable living and slow travel. He would also implement a garden to take food for family but also for the tourists.
Matteo choose Ilaria, the student that cannot attend cause she's ill. He says that he would choose to study environmental sciences at the university (she's 17), because it's so important to have professionals studying the complexity of environment and they will be needed.
At this moment started a very interesting conversation on the interconnection of different knowledge in solving global issues. Luca says that without psychology we cannot solve climate change, cause if people is happy and relaxed, it doesn't need to produce and consume so much. As before, the host at some point decided to stop the conversation and
go on with the questions.
Luca choose Giovanni and says that, despite beekeepers are in forefront of the climate change, he would like to work as Giovanni is working, trying to respect bees and putting animal welfare before money gains. He said he couldn't add more, cause he doesn't know so much about beekeeping.
Third part - Community
The host asked if local municipalities are doing something for climate adaptation and what about local communities too.
Giovanni focused more on community: he says that communities are slowly understanding the situation, but too slowly. He's quite sure that communities around him are not prepared to face bigger threats.
Luca says that administrations are not prepared at all in Apulia, and they cannot be trusted in the preparation of emergency, they work only for emergency. He says that in his mind, Climate Change will highlight the never ending struggle between who dominates and who's dominate, like much of the revolutions in the past.
Matteo says that local communities are not prepared and he stated that schools should be the starting point in every community to build local resilience, cause it's a stronger institution then administration itself.
Then the host asked about future actors (positive - negative) in the climate crisis.
Luca: the negative actors are the rich and dominant, they live and they don't understand the reality of people and planet. They will become positive actors when they will gain from climate adaptation and mitigation.
Positive actor could be psychologists, if they were "used" massively in society to let us shift from the current mindset to a different and more sustainable one.
Giovanni agrees with Luca on the rich and dominant, that can become positive actors if they gain money. He also stated that we should focus more on curiosity, rather than fear, when we approach climate change.(so curiosity as positive actor)
Matteo says the positive actor is school, especially in small communities.
